Next up in our series covering Combiner Wars Deluxe Wave 5, we have Blast Off! Formerly a space shuttle, Blast Off has now adopted a fighter jet mode on the orders of Onslaught who wants to keep him close to the rest of the Combaticon team.
Blast Off is arguably the weakest of the Combaticons, design wise. He’s a straight-up redeco of the Quickslinger / Firefly mold, which is a perfectly good design, but the lack of a new head really hurts this one’s ability to stand apart from the Aerialbots. That being said, Blast Off is using the head which was never available at mass retail, so that is a positive. Really and truly, a lot of the appeal of this mold will come down to how easily you can accept Blast Off as a fighter jet over a shuttle, and credit where credit is due, the choice of the fighter jet form does cater to those who disliked how incongruous a shuttle is in a military themed team, or how out of relative scale it was. (And if you are desperate for that Generation 1 accuracy, Takara-Tomy’s Unite Warriors Bruticus has you covered)
So overall, this Blast Off is a departure, and would have benefited greatly from a different head to give it more of an identity. But I’d urge those on the fence not to dismiss Blast Off out of hand. The deco is sharp and the combined form silhouette is on-point, and above all else, the toy is as much fun now as it was when it was Firefly. Check out the gallery to see for yourself.
